Japan's postal code system (Japanese: “郵便番号”, symbol 〒) was introduced in 1968 to improve efficiency by enabling automated mail sorting. Originally, codes had 3 to 5 digits, but since February 1998 they have been standardized to 7 digits nationwide. In this 7-digit format, the first 3 digits indicate the broad geographic or administrative area, while the last 4 digits pinpoint the specific delivery location, such as a particular street or building.
