In Japan, private homes are considered sacred 'inner' spaces. Visiting and hosting etiquette is highly ritualized, aiming to respect and maintain harmonious human relationships. Gift-giving culture plays a crucial role in this.
Rules for Entering a Home
Punctuality: Being on time is basic, but avoid arriving too early.
Late Notification: If you will be late, you must call in advance to inform and apologize.
Remove Shoes at Genkan: Must remove shoes at the entrance (genkan) of any private home.
Arrange Shoes: After removing shoes, arrange them neatly with the toes pointing towards the door.
Wear Socks: Ensure you are wearing clean, hole-free socks when visiting.
Greeting: Say 'ojamashimasu' (お邪魔します - I will intrude) upon entering.
Avoid Stepping on Thresholds: Do not step on thresholds or tatami borders when entering a Japanese-style room.
Change into Slippers: The host will usually provide indoor slippers for guests.
Remove Slippers on Tatami: Must remove indoor slippers before stepping onto tatami mats.
No Uninvited Guests: Never bring uninvited guests without prior permission.
